Hiking on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug
Walking on the Utrecht Hill Ridge
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug is a beautiful nature area in the middle of the Netherlands, where walking literally becomes an experience on every corner. Forests, heathlands, drifting sand, estates, and viewpoints alternate with one another. Whether you are looking for a relaxed forest walk or a challenging hike with elevation changes and history, you will find it all here.
Why walk here on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug?
There are various reasons why this area is so popular to explore on foot:
- The landscape is varied and surprising: you walk through coniferous forests, along open heathlands, across drifting sand areas, and past old estates.
- There are dozens of marked walking routes, for every level: from short walks to longer hikes of 15 km or more
- The location makes it easily accessible, yet you are still surrounded by peace and nature — ideal for a refreshing walk away from the bustle of the city.
Starting points & accessibility
There are various official starting points or Tourist Transfer Points (TOPs) spread across the Heuvelrug. From these points, you can set off directly.
Many walking paths are accessible all year round. However, rules apply for dogs and off-leash walking in certain areas.
For people with limited mobility, there are also walking routes that are easier to navigate, although the area can sometimes be a little more challenging due to the relief.
Three beautiful walking areas to explore
1. The area around the Pyramid of Austerlitz
This unique monument is located on the Heuvelrug and forms a beautiful starting point for walks. Here you will find forest, heathland, and drifting sand.
Around the pyramid there are routes of various lengths, for families as well as for walkers who want to go a little farther. The Pyramid of Austerlitz is the only pyramid in the whole of the Netherlands.
2. The forest and heath areas near Kaapse Bossen and Leersum
These areas are often mentioned as top walking areas because of their peaceful atmosphere, open heathlands, and forest.
A walk here can be combined with viewpoints or a climb to a tower, such as at the Kaapse Bossen.
3. The eastern part near the Amerongse Berg and surroundings
Here you experience the transition from the raised sandy ridge to lower landscape. The Amerongse Berg is one of the highest points on the Heuvelrug and offers beautiful panoramic views.
Walks here combine forest, open landscape, and special flora, such as heathland and sand drifts.
Tips for your walk
- Wear sturdy shoes: many paths are unpaved, and grip is important, especially after rain.
- Bring water, and possibly something to eat. Some routes pass through quiet nature areas without catering facilities directly along the way.
- Take dog regulations into account: in some parts of the forest, leash requirements or off-leash areas apply.
- Go in clear weather and good visibility: in forest areas in the evening, you don’t want to unexpectedly walk in the dark.
- For families and children: choose a route of 2–6 km, with enough places to pause and a focus on “discovery.”
- Are you interested in history or experiencing nature? Then choose a route past estates, burial mounds, or drifting sand areas.
